Velarde

Velarde is an orchard community between the towns of Espanola and Taos. It is on the Rio Grande, just as the river comes out of the canyon or gorge. Most of the village is irrigated and during the summer and fall, there will be fruit stands open along the highway offering fruit grown locally. First comes apricots, then plums, cherries, peaches and finally, apples. Some years there is a late frost which can greatly inhibit fruit production. This happens often with apricots since they are the first to bloom. Anyone interested in organic gardening for their own use or for commercial use would do well to choose land in Velarde that is irrigated. The irrigation water flows from the Rio Grande, the most reliable source of water in New Mexico. There are usually only a few parcels and homes for sale in the village or across the river in Lyden or La Canova. There is also some non-irrigated land in Velarde, so if farming is important to you, the first question you should ask about a property is "is it irrigated".
